Maginnis Howard attorneys are investigating FastMed, a state-wide urgent care business, for inappropriately collecting payments for services related to COVID-19. Various federal laws stemming from the beginning of the pandemic until recent months have guaranteed free testing, vaccinations, and treatments for the virus. However, some medical facilities have reportedly collected payment from patients for the no-cost services.
In August of 2022, the federal government announced that it would no longer offer free vaccines and treatment. Previously, the government invested vast resources to provide these services for free to the public. Through this program the government then compensated medical facilities for their services.
Since outset of the pandemic, medical professionals worked to administer as many tests, vaccines, and treatments as possible. These services were provided for free for over two years to ensure accessibility to the public. That means FastMed or any other medical provider was prohibited from collecting payment from the public for the services already paid for by the government.
Today, regardless of insurance availability, COVID-19 vaccines are still free to residents of North Carolina. Testing and treatment options are still available, but no longer guaranteed no-cost.
