Maginnis Howard continues to monitor corporations offering COVID relief. For that reason, we updated this article on May 27th, 2023.

Due to COVID-19 and the impact it will have on consumers financially, businesses, banks and corporations have announced measures to help those impacted the most. Among those laying out plans to help customers are energy companies and individual North Carolina counties.

Orange County stopped disconnecting water as a result of non-payment from March 2020 until May of 2022. OWASA has resumed standard collection processes.

Duke Energy suspended disconnections for non-payments due to COVID-19. Allowing customers to keep their power on, even if they are behind on payments. They also said they urge people to pay what they can.

Piedmont Gas resumed normal billing practices last year. They still have options for those facing financial hardships.

Dominion Energy temporarily suspended disconnecting service for non-payment, and even reinstated service for customers. However, they too have resumed billing normally. Their site does have payment plan options for those still struggling.

American Electric Power and their sister company, Appalachian Power, suspended disconnections for 3 months. However, they are still offering financial support and other resources for affected customers.

These are among the many energy companies who have announced that they will be protecting their customers during this difficult time. Other companies have announced that they plan to help, but haven’t laid out a direct plan right yet.
